Empowering Your Children During the Summer Holidays: A Q&A Guide

SCHOOLS OUT

The summer holidays are here, and suddenly your home is filled with fluctuating hormones, varying levels of motivation, and bursts of energy.

How can you help your children regulate their mood and discover their passions during this time?

We have asked our associate therapist Chantelle Hellier about how we can support children and young adults to stay motivated throughout the summer holidays. Chantelle is a registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and holds a Diploma and Degree in Counselling.

chantelle, What are some practical tips for supporting your children during the summer holidays?

  • Establish a Routine: While summer can be a break from the school routine, having a loose schedule can help children know what to expect. Include time for chores, learning, and play.

  • Encourage Independence: Allow your children to make choices about their summer activities. This fosters independence and decision-making skills.

  • Plan Activities: Organize family outings and activities that cater to your child's interests, such as visits to parks, museums, or the zoo. Interactive experiences can enhance learning.

  • Incorporate Learning: Maintain a balance between fun and learning. Consider age-appropriate educational activities like reading, science experiments, or art projects to keep their minds engaged.

How important is it to have a structured schedule during the holidays?

  • Provides Routine: A structured schedule can create a sense of normality, especially for children who thrive on routine. It helps them know what to expect each day and a teen and childs brain likes that.

  • Promotes Productivity: A plan can help maximise time, ensuring that important activities, family events or outings are not missed amidst the holiday bustle.

“Allow your children to make choices about their summer activities. This fosters independence and decision-making skills.”

  • Limits Stress: Having a schedule can alleviate the chaotic feelings that often accompany the holidays. Knowing what needs to be done helps everyone feel more organised and less overwhelmed.

  • Limit Screen Time: Set boundaries around screen time and encourage outdoor play. Explore alternatives like sports, gardening, or family games.

Why are personal goals important for children and teenagers?

Setting personal goals helps teens develop a sense of identity and understand what they value. It encourages self-reflection and awareness of their interests and aspirations. Having clear goals provides motivation and helps teens to focus their efforts. This can lead to improved academic performance and participation in extracurricular activities.

How can you encourage your child's personal interests?

Encouraging your child's personal interests is a great way to support their development, confidence, and happiness.

Share your own interests and passions with your child. Engaging in activities that excite you can inspire them to pursue their own.

Offer encouragement and help when needed, but allow your child autonomy in pursuing their interests. Avoid pushing them towards what you think they should like.

Use their interests to learning opportunities. If they like nature, engage in outdoor activities or field trips; if they are into writing, encourage journaling or story writing. If they like outdoors use outdoor space for activities.

How can you support a child who thrives on social interactions?

Supporting a child who thrives on social interactions involves creating a nurturing environment that encourages social engagement and helps them build strong relationships. Here are some strategies.

  • Organize playdates with friends to encourage 1-1 interactions.

  • Engage them in team sports, clubs, or other activities that align with their interests.

  • Encourage participation in community events.

How can you help your child set and achieve their goals?

Helping your child set and achieve their goals is an important part of fostering their development and self-esteem.

  • Talk to your child about their interests, passions, and dreams. Help them identify what they truly want to achieve, whether it's in academics, sports, arts, or personal development and then work with your child to set specific, realistic goals. Instead of vague goals like "read more," aim for something concrete like "read three books in August."

  • Set your own personal goals and share them with your child. This can inspire them and show that goal-setting is a lifelong skill.

  • Provide Resources and Support can ensure success, whether it's a library card, sports equipment, or a designated space for social gatherings. Your support and encouragement will go along way.

  • Keep track of their progress and celebrate their milestones. This could be as simple as a sticker chart for younger kids or a more sophisticated tracking method for teenagers. Recognize their achievements with rewards that align with their interests. You can share your own goal achievements too.

“Having clear goals provides motivation and helps teens to focus their efforts.”

What should you do when your child experiences highs and lows during the summer?

Summer has its highs and lows. There will be days when your child is highly motivated and days when they might feel down. It's essential to enjoy the highs and accept the lows.

Encourage them to be kind to themselves and understand that it's okay to have off days. Your role is to provide a steady, supportive presence that helps them navigate these fluctuations.

Encourage the child to engage in physical activities such as swimming, running, or playing outside. Exercise can help improve mood and reduce stress.

Help create a safe space for the child to express their feelings. Ask questions and listen without judgment.

What are some ways to encourage physical activity in your child?

Encouraging physical activity in children is essential for their health, development, and overall well-being. Here are lots of effective strategies to promote an active lifestyle:

  • Be active yourself and demonstrate enthusiasm for physical activities. Engage in activities as a family, like walking, biking, or playing sports.

  • Choose activities that your child enjoys. Experiment with various sports, games, or outdoor activities to find their interests.

  • Incorporate fun elements, like music or games, to make physical activity enjoyable.
